May 2015 Inside the Rotarian

May 6, 2015

The 106th annual Rotary International Convention will be June 6-9 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. President Gary Huang says, "To have friends come together from faraway places is a wonderful thing."

Did you know one in five American children struggle with hunger? Some experts believe it takes more than food to end hunger in the wealthiest nation on the planet. Read about the Share Our Strength program led by Billy Shore in the May magazine.

Shore says hunger is a symptom of a larger problem: poverty. Handing out food is like putting a Band-Aid on a wound that won't heal. It's true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is brain food, says actor Jeff Bridges who works with Shore.

Feeding people ends their hunger for the course of a meal or a day, they say. Ending hunger means putting a system in place to ensure that all children get the three meals they need every day.

Millions of American households experienced food insecurity last year, meaning they did not have consistent access to food. Yet, our country is experiencing an obesity epidemic. A high percentage of our food ends up in the trash.

In a land of abundance, how can a child go hungry? As much as 40 percent of the U.S. food supply is wasted, producing more waste than plastic, paper, metal or glass. No wonder the world's poor wants to come to America!
